Based on the authentic traditions of the Ikuta school, this book employs a rational
approach that enables learners to progressively master koto playing from fundamentals
to advanced techniques.
Starting with explanations of the koto’s structure and terminology, the book carefully
explains basic techniques such as sound production and arm movement. It further
covers all essential elements of koto performance, including techniques for both the
right and left hands, important playing methods such as glissando, expressive
techniques through tone colour control, and advanced techniques for creating sound
effects. Points where beginners often struggle are clearly illustrated with visual aids for
easy understanding.
The author was born as the grandson of Miyagi Michio, the composer of “Haru no
Umi”(The Sea in Spring), and from an early age received tuition on the koto from his
father, who was Miyagi Michio’s son-in-law.
Drawing upon his extensive performance experience both in Japan and abroad, as well
as years of teaching expertise, this book is an essential resource for those who wish to
learn koto, those who teach it, and those who wish to systematically relearn the
techniques of the Ikuta school.
